STCW 6.2 Proficiency in Survival Craft Refresher And Rescue Boats Refresher (PSC – R)

Overview

The aim of the course is to refresh the skills of those who are assigned to crew a ship’s lifeboat or rescue boat, other than a fast rescue boat, with the knowledge and skills to safely and efficiently carry out those duties.

Seafarers qualified in survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats in accordance with Chapter VI, Section A-VI/2, paragraph 4 of the STCW Convention shall be required, every 5 years, to provide evidence of having maintained the required standard of competence to undertake the tasks, duties, and responsibilities listed in column 1 of table A-VI/2-1 of the Convention.

PROGRAM CONTENT

This course meets the requirements of Chapter VI, Section A-VI/2, paragraph 5 of the STCW Convention, including the 2010 Manilla Amendments.

This program includes

  • Discussion and demonstration of various davit/launching arrangements
  • Discussion and demonstration of various lifeboat and survival craft types
  • Liferafts, rigid hull liferafts, and marine evacuation systems
  • Survival, first aid and rescue
  • Helicopter Assistance

Practical training exercises will be conducted in water.  These exercises will include:

  • Operate in a safe and effective manner an enclosed lifeboat on open water
  • Approach and recover a crew over board into the enclosed lifeboat safely and effectively, acting as coxswain and as crew
  • Take a liferaft or lifeboat in tow safely and effectively with an enclosed lifeboat, acting as coxswain and as crew
  • Operate the enclosed lifeboat in various sea and swell conditions
  • Steer compass courses as directed to move the enclosed lifeboat clear of danger in reduced visibility
  • Conduct voice communications over the VHF radio as appropriate for an abandonment situation
  • Launch and recover an enclosed lifeboat under gravity davits safely and efficiently using a releasing painter
  • Pace with an FRB in order to transfer castaways safely and efficiently for transfer to a safe place
  • Participate in a simulated abandonment into the ocean wearing an immersion suit, launch, inflate and board a liferaft and be rescued by an FRB
