Respiratory Fit Testing

Overview of Service

SSTL provides client personnel with a verifiable test of the appropriate fit of SCBA facepieces (or comparable sealed face pieces intended for contained breathing arrangements) and, as applicable, a certificate of fitness for the intended type of mask or filter, required for the corresponding particular area of work.   Manufacturer certified equipment, once properly fit tested, helps ensure a proper fit and seal to the wearer’s face, which in turn increases safety of the wearer.

A Quantitative fit test measures the adequacy of a respirator’s fit by numerically measuring the amount of leakage into the respirator using a specialized sampling device (Portacount).

A Qualitative fit test is a pass/fail test that relies on the individual’s response to a test agent such as saccharin, isoamyl acetate (banana oil), Bitrex and irritant smoke.

SSTL performs fit testing services at its training delivery locations or in a clean room supplied by the client, with a suitable working area, at their site. Provision of this service reflects the regulations and standards put forth by CSA (Canadian Standards Association), and NFPA (National Fire Protection Association).  Manufacturer’s maintenance and operational procedures are adhered to at all times.

SSTL maintains qualified staff and suitable facilities/equipment/calibrated tools to provide Quantitative and Qualitative Respiratory Fit Testing corresponding to the following facepieces/masks (others available upon request):

  • 3M
  • Drager
  • Spearian
  • Scott
  • MSA
